External API design

I need to complete an assignment on Programming - it should be a design of an external API (used Dropwizard as suggested as well) for the website. Other users (members of the Annual subscription) should be able to login programmatically and connect to databases, dataware house data, and so on.
Where can I find any patterns or guiding principles for actual API design (methods, protocol, classes)?
